Ken and Clive established Synaptik in 2012, and they manage and direct the day-to-day business with Elizabeth Preston. They are ably supported by Brian Montgomery and Didi Welsh. Between them, this senior management team consists of healthcare professionals with over 125 years of experience. Synaptik can also count on the help of over 20 other healthcare strategy experts, as well as hundreds more highly qualified staff on the ground delivering healthcare within the NHS as part of our waiting time support service.
Here’s a little more about our management team.
I joined the pharmaceutical industry straight after graduating from university. At first I worked as a representative for a smaller pharmaceutical company in Edinburgh and West Lothian, before joining what was ICI Pharmaceuticals, which became Zeneca and then AstraZeneca. I have more than 25 years experience across a range of commercial functions and senior management positions.
I am delighted to now be a Director of Synaptik, with a particular focus on business strategy and development. Let me put my experience of high level strategic development within major pharmaceuticals towards helping your organisation get an edge on your competitors.
I grew up in Liverpool, and after university began a career in pharmaceuticals. Initially based in the West Midlands, I moved to Scotland in the late 80s. Over time my career evolved into specialist medicines and then focused on cancer. My last role also focused on cancer but looked at the emerging cancer networks, their differing structures and influence, and the funding and approval pathways for cancer products after National Licensing.
Within Synaptik I take the lead on NHS Services, using our extensive in-house expertise in this area to give our clients a distinct and measurable return.
I am an experienced healthcare professional with a varied clinical and managerial career in the NHS. I have successfully led the delivery of the waiting times targets for cancer across NHS Lothian, and the development of acute oncology services.
My goal at Synaptik is simple: I want to give you the education and tools to help you make you and your business thrive. I’ll teach you which actions will get you what you want, help you grow your capabilities and connections and get you to that next level of success, no matter where you are in the process right now. I am particularly passionate about service improvement and can work with you to provide plans and projects for business success. I can also provide personal coaching and team building events.
I recently retired from the role of Medical Director of NHS Fife, a post I had held for 6 years. Latterly I had also held the roles of Deputy and then Interim Chief Executive. I originally trained as a general practitioner and for 14 years was a GP Principal in East Calder Medical Practice in West Lothian. I held the post of Co-ordinator of the West Lothian GP Locality Group before, in 1999, taking up the role of Medical Director of West Lothian Healthcare Trust, Scotland’s first fully integrated Trust responsible for primary and community care, mental health and acute hospital services.
I am a successful professional leader with a managerial background in the peri-operative and ambulatory care setting where I acted as Clinical Manager covering multi-specialty theatre suites.
As a skilled project manager I also project-managed the delivery of a £14.2 million project for the development of surgical services of a state-of-the-art Endoscopy unit at St John’s Hospital, Livingston, and was responsible for reviewing multiple corporate initiatives across a range of functions and services in Lothian Health.
I was delighted to bring my skills and experience to Synaptik, where they have proven to be a natural fit. My current role is to manage the development of Synaptik’s nursing team.
